Lighting that loves all of life.

The increasing focus on human comfort and environmental sustainability is slowly transforming the approach to urban planning.

Public space is being redesigned to encourage pedestrians and cyclists because slow mobility improves urban vitality and liveability.

Plants and green spaces are being integrated into the urban fabric to create healthier environments in which humans can reconnect with nature.

BLOS was created to sustain these new practices and illuminate urban space by offering visual comfort to people who move on foot or by bicycle and to protect nature from the damage of light pollution.

Lighting that takes care of people and makes urban spaces more welcoming and habitable.

Outdoor lighting, and street lighting in particular, is generally designed and regulated according to the characteristics of car users. But BLOS is specifically designed for the well-being of pedestrians and cyclists.

The lighting that non-motorised users need is very different to what motorists require due to the differences in travelling speeds, visibility requirements and viewing directions. The issue still requires more investigation, so new studies were acquired regarding the definition and measurement of glare for non-motorised users. This research was carried out in collaboration with the Energy Department of the Turin Polytechnic. The results obtained have enabled an innovative optical system to be developed that avoids both disability glare and discomfort glare for non-motorised users.

Lighting that preserves the darkness of night while respecting the biological rhythms of flora and fauna.

BLOS reduces light pollution by preventing light flux dispersion in any direction where it is not strictly required by pedestrians and cyclists.

Using a sophisticated light source shielding system, high angles are obscured and unwanted emissions are avoided.

This controlled spatial lighting distribution is then combined with the choice of warm white light sources that have the most suitable spectral distribution for protecting biodiversity.

BLOS is an ideal solution for pollinator-friendly systems as it mitigates the effects of artificial night lighting on insects. Focusing the light on the horizontal area requiring illumination preserves the darkness of the environment and avoids disorienting flying animals.

Approximately 60% less pollinators visit plants if an area is artificially lit, and daytime pollinators cannot compensate for the pollination deficit that occurs at night.
