The exterior of the Hospital Universitari de la Santa Creu

Vic, Spain

The transformation of utility areas into common spaces is an increasingly popular trend in towns and cities of all sizes. Areas that were once considered as merely functional - for communications, parking or handling - are now becoming spaces to be experienced to all effects, both day and night.

As a consequence, aesthetics and safety are now on a par with practical aspects. Together with street furniture, which is ever increasingly the subject of projects for design and territorial valorisation, lighting is also considered of great importance and is often the forerunner for present and future projects involving the implementation of technological solutions.

Illuminating a modern public space

The exterior of the Hospital Universitari de la Santa Creu in Vic, Spain, is a good example of how increased attention focused on these spaces can produce results of great impact from both a social and design point of view. There is no need for large spaces, large cities or grand projects, but simply the desire to make the most of each area, treating the user as a priority both from a functional and aesthetic point of view.

In this regard, it is interesting to note how the physical appearance of a space is not “an extra”, but instead has a direct effect on the way people use it, experience it and play a part in it.

Beyond the necessary aspects of a technical nature, in this case the planners and the municipality of Vic gave particular importance to aesthetics, opting for modern and bold products such as Ekleipsis and Kosmos, two solutions that adapt perfectly to this outdoors area, with its clean and essential lines.
